SPRAVATO® Q & A

What is Spravato?

Ketamine has been used as a medication for anesthesia during surgery for decades, and more recently, it has proven successful in treating depression.

Research has shown that Ketamine therapy offers relief in 80% of patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD). This means that ketamine has been able to relieve symptoms of depression when other treatments – like antidepressants, therapy, and lifestyle changes - have failed.

In March of 2019, esketamine, which acts similarly to ketamine, was approved by the FDA as Spravato®. It is a nasal spray that is also used to treat TRD.

Am I a candidate for Spravato?

Spravato may be right for you if you have been diagnosed with major depression or TRD by a mental health professional. This requires having suffered at least one severe depressive episode and not experiencing improvement after treatment with various antidepressants.

When you visit Soluna Mind and Wellness, your provider conducts a psychiatric evaluation to fully understand your emotional, mental, and cognitive well-being and determine if you have TRD. They may also review your family and medical history to get a more complete picture of the factors influencing your mental health.

If it's determined that you have TRD, your provider may prescribe Spravato therapy in addition to another oral antidepressant.

What is treatment with Spravato like?

If your provider determines that Spravato is an appropriate treatment for you, it is administered at Soluna Mind and Wellness. Esketamine (Spravato) is a fast-acting nasal spray, and the initial treatment can last about two hours.

After the nasal spray is administered, you relax and remain under medical supervision at Soluna Mind and Wellness until all potential side effects have passed.

How does Spravato work?

Spravato increases glutamate production in your brain. Glutamate is an abundant and powerful neurotransmitter that can combat symptoms of depression.

If you are looking for quick relief, many patients have experienced an improvement in their symptoms in just a few hours after treatment. Treatment with Sprvato can provide relief for up to several months.

If you're interested in learning more about Spravato treatments, which will be available starting in 2026, call Soluna Mind and Wellness or request an appointment online today.
