PTSD Q & A

What is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops after someone goes through a dangerous or terrifying event. Any type of trauma may cause fear and anxiety; however, over time, they usually lessen.

With PTSD, the fear and anxiety triggered by the traumatic event worsen over time and cause symptoms that interfere with daily life. As a result, people with PTSD may constantly feel stressed or afraid, even when they’re not in any danger.

What are the symptoms of PTSD?

PTSD symptoms usually appear within three months of the traumatic event, though they may also develop years later. The symptoms tend to be severe and disruptive to daily life.

People with PTSD experience symptoms that fall into four categories:

Avoidance symptoms

Staying away from places or events that remind you of the trauma or avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the trauma are examples of PTSD avoidance symptoms.

Re-experiencing symptoms

Nightmares, flashbacks, and frightening thoughts are PTSD re-experiencing symptoms.

Arousal symptoms

Feeling on edge or easily startled are types of arousal symptoms in PTSD. These symptoms may be constant and cause feelings of stress and anger.

Cognition and mood symptoms

Cognition and mood symptoms with PTSD affect how you think and feel. Examples include difficulty remembering the traumatic event, having negative thoughts about yourself, or feelings of guilt and shame about the trauma.

What are the treatments for PTSD?

Treatment for PTSD varies, and it can take time to find the right combination that helps you get relief from your symptoms. At Soluna Mind and Wellness, the team works closely with you to develop a plan that provides you with the best possible outcomes.

Initial treatment for your PTSD may include psychotherapy and medication management. The team works with you at your own pace to determine what works best for you, allowing you to heal with a greater sense of safety and control.

However, when traditional treatments fail to provide significant relief from your PTSD symptoms, the team may recommend alternative therapies, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, which is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic coils to send magnetic pulses to specific areas of your brain. These magnetic pulses activate nerve cells in your brain that alleviate symptoms.

Don’t let PTSD keep you from living your life well. Call Soluna Mind and Wellness or request an appointment online today.
